Speedbumps
But those who wait on the Lord Shall renew their strength…….(Isa 40:31)
I recently watched workmen install several speed bumps on the driveway outside my office window….that got me to thinking about speed bumps which GOD places in our lives! Several things are true of speed bumps:
- they are there to SLOW you down
- if you ignore them, you can do great damage
- they are there for YOUR protection and for the protection of others.
West coast theologian Dallas Willard, when asked about the key to a victorious Christian walk, replied “Ruthlessly eliminate hurry from your life.” Often this is a difficult thing to do…and not necessarily because we want to make another dollar or buy another toy. Often our busyness has to do with ministry, and with a desire to be available to help others. As people involved in ministry we need to slow down now and then, sharpen our spiritual focus, rest our weary bodies, and gain a new perspective. When Elijah was feeling defeated after some great spiritual victories, God told him to rest….then woke him up and fed him, told him to rest again, and woke him up and fed him a second time, THEN Elijah continued his ministry. ( I Kings 19)
Maybe God has placed some strategic speed bumps in your path to slow you down a bit…when you recognize a trial as a divine speed bump, PAY ATTENTION! If you ignore it, you can do great damage…to your self, your family, your friends, your music group, your church. Sometimes the most spiritual thing you can do is slow down and rest….
THOUGHT:“In place of our exhaustion and spiritual fatigue, God will give us rest. All He asks is that we come to Him…that we spend a while thinking about Him, meditating on Him, talking to Him, listening in silence, occupying ourselves with Him – totally and thoroughly lost in the hiding place of His presence.” (Chuck Swindoll)
