Description
As a young boy, Rabbi Hugo Gryn was confined to the German internment camp at Auschwitz. Food was scarce, and every morsel that could be scavenged was saved and protected. So it was with a sense of horror that Hugo watched his Father take a lump of margarine with which to light the Hannukah candle. When Hugo’s father was asked why he would do such a thing, his reply was insightful, “We know that it is possible to live for three weeks without food, but without hope it is impossible to live properly for three minutes.” (adapted from “Jewish Chicken Soup For the Soul, pub.
